I believe that nurturing a strong, loving connection to God, self and others is everyone’s joyful work of a lifetime.
Spiritual direction creates space for a sacred relationship between the Holy Spirit, a director and a seeker. The seeker is both prompted and encouraged in understanding and deepening of faith by the Spirit. This is accomplished through inspired conversation and in considering questions from the director.
This is a commitment of time set apart to focus on the movement of God in the everyday moments of life. It encourages the seeker to pull away from the demands of lists/schedules/pressures of the day, to recognize and become more aware of the grace and presence of the Lord in their life.
I frame direction time as ‘seeker-led’. This is the seekers opportunity to reflect and discuss what’s on their heart. If they have a difficult time figuring out how to voice their faith or concerns, I have found that deciding on a book to read together is a great help. My goal is to have a comfortable, warm environment where ideas and thoughts can be freely expressed.
The first meeting together is normally in a relaxed, neutral setting before beginning a spiritual direction relationship. Meeting for coffee is my usual go-to suggestion. That way, the prospective directee/seeker can meet me, ask any questions, and I can explain how the direction process flows. The seeker can also talk about the reasons they are interested in direction.
I have been a spiritual director since 2019. I’m currently on the list of approved directors in the Archdiocese of Indianapolis, Mayslake Ministries, and Fr. Ronald Rohlheiser’s “Forest Dwellers” program. I am also a member of Spiritual Directors International, where I attend on-line classes and enrichment programs. We are called to love God and each other, and that’s a lifetime journey. Why walk alone?
